Montana Hydraulics – Meeting your supply chain needs.

What we do

Montana Hydraulics is a machine shop and fabrication facility located in Helena, Montana, with a second plant located in Townsend, MT. Not only do we design and build our own products, we also contract with other manufacturers to build components for their products. Working with various metals, we fabricate components that meet our customer’s stringent requirements and our own requirements for quality. Our Quality Management System meets the requirements of ISO 9001:2015.

LASER CUTTING SERVICES

A lot of products we manufacture start with components processed on our Mazak Optiplex 6k Watt fiber laser. By starting with laser cut parts we can reduce production times and increase quality. Components are more accurate, have a superior finish and can reduce or eliminate some drilling and milling processes. By maintaining a high level of accuracy, we decrease post cutting activities like grinding and deburring, saving our customers money and improving quality.

Additionally, by using fiber laser technology we can process metals that traditionally had to be cut on a water jet. Some of the metals we can cut on our laser are:

  • Carbon steels up to 1″ thick
  • Stainless steels up to ¾” thick
  • Aluminum up to 5/8″ thick
  • Copper up to 3/8″ thick
  • Brass up to 3/8″ thick
  • Exotic materials such as titanium

Further enhancing the production process, we can laser etch part numbers into the pieces cut on the laser, making material tracking easier and more reliable

SAWING

For materials that can’t be cut in a laser, we have CNC bandsaws and other sawing equipment that quickly and accurately cuts materials for both the fabrication and machining. We understand that our customer’s bottom line affects our bottom line, and we are committed to making our processes more efficient. That efficiency starts with material processing.

METAL FORMING

Our metal forming capabilities includes a 320-ton press brake with CNC back gauge and a plate roll capable of rolling 3/8″ AR plate. From heavy and thick parts to sheet metal processing, we have the capability to meet most of our customer’s requirements. We can form parts up to 12′ long, and often work with materials that range from 24 gauge up to ¾”.

MACHINING

In our machine shop you will find a mix of CNC and manual machines. This versatility allows us to serve customers with only a few parts and customers with large production runs. Our machine shop delivers repeatability, accuracy and value.

We operate lathes, milling machines, grinders and hones. The material sizes and types we can process is quite expansive, and we always carefully evaluate our customers’ requirements before accepting work to see if it will fit in our scope. We can’t be everything to everyone, so we work to be the best at what we do. Our experienced personnel will consult with you and determine your needs and if we can fit your needs in a manner that provides the best value for your money.

WELDING

Almost everyone who owns a welder or has ever donned a welding hood claims to be a welder. How do you separate the wheat from the chaff? Montana Hydraulics understands how critical welded connections are, so we adhere to the current AWS Standards and Codes, as well as many others. All our welded connections will meet code requirements specified by our customers, if our customers don’t specify requirements, we weld to code requirements appropriate for the application.

Welding performed in our facility starts with Weld Procedure Specification (WPS). Our welders follow the parameters of the WPS to ensure that the welding process achieves the intended results. Procedures that are not prequalified by welding codes are qualified by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), where welded joints are test by an accredited lab.

Our welding personnel are qualified to the WPSs by taking qualification test, ensuring that welded connections meet requirements. All this is conducted by our in-house AWS CWI, and our records are documents and up to date. Welded joints are inspected by our CWI, and when required or requested, a third-party inspector. We also work with Welding Service Industrial Inspection in Butte, MT to provide NDT.

HYDRAULICS

We design, build and service hydraulic cylinders and components. We have the capacity to work with cylinder bores up to 14″ and as small as 1″. Not only do we design and build cylinders for our customers’ specific needs, we also repair cylinders of all types and sizes.

Our experienced personnel are well trained, and everything we build, or repair is fully tested on our test bench. We offer a standard 2-year warranty on repairs, and 3 – 5 years on new cylinders (type, location and service may affect warranty, contact us for a consultation).

Our customers include companies such as BNSF Railway, Spika Design and Fabrication, the US Army Corp of Engineers and many others.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

Our Quality Management System meets the requirements of ISO 9001:2015. We have been certified since May 12, 2014. We have maintained our certification during that entire period, and we are dedicated to continual improvement. Our Registrar is SRI Quality System Registrar, and our registration number is 5563-00.

We are happy to provide you with any documentation you need, and welcome audits from current and prospective customers. Let us know, we will be pleased to accommodate you.
